Signs I am back in the northwest: Servers in restaurants wearing beanie hats and covered in tattoos; vintage and second-hand shopping extravaganzas; the smell of quality coffee and fresh loose-leaf tea; bearded men in flannel shirts or mustached men in skinny jeans; food carts that allow you to taste the world in one spot; the words organic, gluten-free, peanut-free, dairy-free, vegan, and local all on one menu page; “Reading is Sexy” stickers on people’s cars; white-robed hippies with silver sparkles around their eyes leading you through rituals to help you start the new year right; juggling unicyclists; photo booth weddings; people in pajamas eating breakfast at noon; and lots and lots of green trees. Absorb, absorb, absorb…then off to Honduras for two months to improve Spanish skills and be a nurse again.
